Gulouxu Market

Gulouxu Waterfront Commercial Street

Free flowing fishing life

Gulou adjoins Xijiang River, which makes it a commercial market thanks to the convenient water transportation.

In the early Ming Dynasty, the market was called “Gulouxu”. After hundreds of years of development, it gradually became a relatively developed place for business.

According to the 2001 edition of Heshan County Annals, numerous merchants came here in history, “In the Republic of China, there were more than 200 shops, with a permanent population of about 6,000 people, and nearly 10,000 people on market day.”

“Sheng Wu Du”(Guangzhou to Guangxi Wuzhou ship) went ashore by way of Gualo, which unveils that Gulou was prosperous those days.

The manuscripts written by Mr. Gu Yong’an also recorded the once prosperous Gulou, “Longxi (Gulou was known as Longxi County in the past) is a precious place near Xijiang River, and you can travel to Shisafang.

This place once divided into the south and north, and people surnamed Gu and Lao inhabited here. Xijiang River rolls to the east, sailing in the waves.

The market is bustling with merchants, Sanbao Tongjin wharf is busy...”

In the past, Gulouxu market was mainly the commercial circulation place of stores and the front shop and back field (handicraft field).

Shops are lined from Sanbao Tongjin wharf, the west end, to Xuantan Temple, the east end, (the current location of Yatushi) downstream,

from Xijiang River, the north, to Cunxin Street, the south end.

Then, there were the main streets, Haibian Street, Zhuqi Street, Donglai Street, Guolan Street, Chahang Street, Yongning Street (also known as Yuhang Street), Huiyuan Street, Cunxin Street, Canzhi Street,

Zhuzaihang Street, etc.
